for me I almost always make combatting the villainous teams or stopping catastrophe a joint effort between protags and champions and strong trainers, but I never make dexholders mary sues or chosen ones. I like the idea of competent adults so I don't go for the manga for inspiration, protags are always aged up because I just can't see a 10 year old (like some of them still piss themselves lmao) taming a lion that can produce 10 million volts of lightning or a great ape that spits fire, and I make legendaries simply too powerful (even the lesser ones that are defeatable by human intervention) to be contained by mere pokeballs. I try not to make the regions have direct real-world parallels (for one cockney accents aren't the same as scottish accents!)
also Leon, Cynthia and Red aren't undefeatable, I'm not fucking 10 so I don't find the idea of a Gary Stu ultimus appealing. They should have very close W-L records against each other to cement the idea that they're true rivals at the top of the world
Integral aspects: Core Regions MUST be in the fic. If it came up in a main series game (even in the future) there's lore and material that you can work with and make your own, and it's your responsibility to find someway to incorporate that or segue it, even briefly.
Bikes: because bikes are utilitarian, cheap, easy to maintain, comfortable, and much less low maintenance than needing to feed or call for ride pokemon which may or may not be at service depending or circumstances, weather, or any kind of unavailability or vagary arising.
