I remember liking lots of the Johto only characters too, like Casey and I think the Hoenn dude was Harrison?
It had a really nice atmosphere, being set in Kansai and all, and it was pretty much the end of old pokemon.
I liked Advance when it came out (albeit I felt I had outgrown the show when watching the
Lat Am dub) and I liked May better than Misty (because I never liked Misty that much) but it doesn't feel nostalgic at all.
