You’re barely a ‘bodyguard’. It’s the opening sequence with the bridge, the meadow (which she’s not really in danger just lost), rescuing her from Aether (with Gladion and Hau), and then escorting her to the altar for Nebby. Most of her story doesn’t even involve you. Characters like Kukui, Burnet, Hau, Olivia, Hapu, Acerola, & Wicke are helping her more than anything. The only time you’re a bodyguard is when she’s starting to gain her own strength but she obviously can’t scale the wilderness on her own especially that Nebby is inactive as Cosmoem. Most of your time in Alola is away from her. You’re more of a motivator.

This is also a great change of pace from constanly beating the living shit out of Calem/Serena, Hau and Hop and crushing their dreams (they doubled down on it with Kieran instead lol).
She's already a champion. It's not a big deal if you beat her at the end of the game when she brings her best team.

I mean at least Lillie had an arc but i didn't feel like it related to the mc in any meaningful way. She was just there and then you were forced to watch.

I would say Lillie's story was nice too but in my opinion the way ONLY Lillie mattered is what makes the huge difference. Hau barely matters despite having some sort of character arc and Gladio's role is basically being Lillie's rude bodyguard when you aren't there, SV feels like a proper implementation of BW and XY multiples friends thing with SM's "one of them is the key to the villain's story" part.
Fans seem very pleased with them specially in japan so I really hope GF learns from SV success and makes something similar for gen 10.

Kukui is also not a gatekeeper btw, the gatekeepers are Hala/Molayne, Olivia, Acerola and Kahili. Kukui is a challenger, exactly the same as Hau in the Ultra version or any of the other challengers in the post game. Alola's only league champion is the MC.

But Incineroar is pretty consistent with baby mons, the problem is even if I almost always draw Incineroar with Cleffa, I get bodyblasted later. I can't stand 100 damage with Silvally and then tank the 130 damage from Rampardos. I can't stand 90 damage from Espeon and a 170 Silveon nuke later. It's not only consistency, these decks have multiple Pokemons that attack one after another while I build a deck around one single mon that has to somehow survive all this shit. Lillie can't heal it all, 140 damage isn't that great unless I draw Hau, and the deck space is too limited to add much else
