You form an emotional connection, the story feels personal, it has actual impact. And I mean even for the people who hate him. Hate him or love him, I think it'd be hard to forget him. Without any of that he would've been, like, Allister 2.0 or just another cute rival like Wally or Hau, at least to me. Cute design, cute personality, but not much else.
