Rivals are these goody two shoes that uplift you after you beat them and steal their dreams, having a rival that is actually bitter about losing to this extreme is refreshing, he is a piece of shit that immediately thinks people are laughing behind his backs or worse, has no regards for ogerpon feelings and even goes to the extreme of doing something incredibly nice just to gain favor of that Pokemon, normally this would be a redeeming factor but the way the camera shows his reaction is one of someone that just went "just as planned", when all things fail he becomes even more resentful and obsessed with power
It's interesting, I don't hate the little paranoid shitter because I want more rivals like this
