>>53292391The 4Kids dub is how Pokémon in animated form even got popular overseas. They retained 70% of the Japanese score from Kanto all the way to Early Johto, and kept the Japanese OST for all Movies from Celebi to the end of their tenure with Lucario. It’s not a typical 4Kids dub: it was actually a lot better than DiC, Saban, Funi Dragonball Z, and the voice actors basically defined the characters in English for close to a decade. It’s inferior to the Japanese Version, but it’s already a kiddie show, so it worked well enough. And yeah, 4Kids actually kept kimonos in the dub sometimes, dojos, and even (rice balls), they just did unneeded and stupid Americanization because at the time it was commonplace.
It’s better on all fronts than the current TPCi dub, and it’s not nostalgia at all. The scripts were questionable then AND now, but what is glaringly obvious is between the two dubs, the 4Kids dub had notably better voice acting quality, music scoring (even their own dub score wasn’t anywhere close to as jarring as the XY-JN dub stuff at any point ever), and opening themes. The current dub era also ended up doing censorship, it’s no better there.
tl;dr It is obviously inferior to the Japanese version, but it sure as fuck was better than TPCi’s dub over the last 17 years.
