The idea of dual protags isn't a bad one but I think JN would have been better served going back to the classic OG relationship dynamic- a Trainer and a Coach. Sure, Ash was very much an experienced protag at this point, but like all the Great Sporting Dynasties, he still needs someone to refine his tactics and give him that extra mental approach.
He needed someone strong, someone smart. I think Kukui could have done that job, continuing on the Father-Son dynamic from JN but now Father-Son Coaching. Or someone strong like Paul
or Alain-kun
