There's a challenge in Viridian city in the original Gold and Silver where you can fight a powerful trainer. The default trainer uses a team of the 3 final stages of each Johto starter at level 50 but if you used the Mystery Gift feature (which sucked ass back in the day because it was only usable on the GBC instead of GB[Pocket] or later on the GBA) you would face off against the team of the person you connected to.

As a kid I thought it was the last team you connected to for a battle but apparently it was just Mystery Gift.

Fixes most of the issues with gen 1 and creates the standards for third versions of games. Also it's Johto, one of the most content-packed regions in the franchise.

Buggy unfinished dogshit that has been supplanted by FRLG and LGPE. There is no reason to play RBYG in 2026 and having done a run of red version back in 2023, I can safely say it was the most miserable pokemon experience of my life.

I Choose You had a nice setting, but it was a weird one to me. It's a reimagining of S1 as if it took place in modern time. Pokemon from Sinnoh or Alola are already discovered, unlike the original where the lore wasn't yet developed at beyond Kanto. It's a cool idea for a remake, like how HGSS is Johto as if it happened during Gen 4.
But strangely they sanded the edges from Ash's personality. No fun banter or crude jokes, it's like they timeskipped him to be heroic and friendly as XY. They also replaced Brock and Misty with some Sinnoh characters who are sadly forgotten.

Rocket in Johto is one of the lowest points of the series, I say this as someone who generally despises gen 6 onwards, and likes gen 2 as a whole.
Spending 2 hours fighting level 15 Ratata and Koffing with your level 30-40 pokemon is the worst.

Alola feels like a good shot, four story areas (the main islands) and an easy sandbox area (Aether Foundation), they could either further develop the Pokopia disaster or lean into the idea that you've intervening in an Alola that's starting from Ultra Beast influence, and now have to figure out how to strike a balance between the interdimensional settlers and the natives.
Realistically though, they'd make a Pokopia for Hoenn or Unova (Johto isn't allowed to be touched on ever, GameFreak would rather die than throw West Kanto a bone).

The primary concern is that you still need to figure something out for status effects (N doesn't help with this either way).
He would help G.Moltres's damage substantially but then you wouldn't be using Grimmsnarl and by extension you aren't going to have enough zone to work with even if you go for 5/5.
"Mandatory" is a hard word to describe him with overall. I brought him up to Johto hell myself but that had a lot to do with Lacey covering for him as well as she does.

I read a similar one, while Ash was doing his adventuring somewhere outside the main plot, the girls worked with Gary, Tracy and Prof. Oak. Even Riley and Lance joined then later.

I guess understandable with how early and nostalgic some of those episodes were, some of the filler in Johto and Hoenn was a bit shaky at times as well. I do think there are way more interesting ones, which is why I enjoyed Chronicles a lot.

I don't get how people can complain about a Pokemon being bad in single player. The games are made for babies, it's rare you get a Pokemon that will actually make it super difficult to progress.

My last time playing Gen 2 I made it through Johto with only a party of Furret, Togetic and Bellossom. Didn't use the other three party slots. It was the first time that Chuck ever kicked my ass but I still ended up beating him and it was still fun.

Johto DLC makes the most sense. It's connected to Kanto and you could roll out DLC in phases, either expanding what we haven't seen in Kanto yet, then adding Johto locations, and ending the DLC lineup with a last hurrah with Mt. Silver

if they did a straight up expansion for pokopia instead of pokopia 2 then they could very easily do an indigo plateau/mt silver map that leads into johto with its own few maps.

I like it more when it was a phenomenon. Where Pokemon was more often than not just unordinary animals, mutated/artificial beings or just in general mythological/folklore beings. It made sense in the context of Pokeballs (Kurt and then the modern iteration made in 1925) and Team Rocket; hell, even Kanto/Johto as a whole.
After RSE, the whole thing with Kanto just feels like a sore thumb.

Hoenn had the best mons and human protagonists in terms of design.
But in terms of the game itself I still prefer Johto, Sinnoh, and Unova.
GBA was not developed enough to let Hoenn shine in its full glory.
Same thing for ORAS, Game Freak was not ready for 3D.
