You can tell something shifted and changed midway into Journeys, likely when they decided Ash would be fucking off, because that's when you start to notice the higher focus on the PWC. I think that's also when they decided to do that with Leon for the sake of "hype".
The most upsetting part is that you can notice they're not fully retarded too. There's very clear and obvious reasons why, for example, they fed Alan and Diantha to Leon. They're smart enough to know that doing that to Cynthia or Steven would have caused a major meltdown. They're smart enough to decide on Alan for "fanservice" and to give people a copewin by having Ash beating Leon who beat Alan meaning Ash symbolically beat Alan now stop being upset about the Kalos League. Not smart enough to realize that doing that misses the point super hard though.
But absolutely nothing was portrayed in a convincing manner so it all fell flat.
They could easily done something proper had they wanted but for some reason simply did not.
