What's their unifying theme? A good starter trio lives in tandem with each other (which is why the Kalos starters look great together, whether the individual designs are any good or not is a different conversation)
There is nothing between the PLZA starters, they feel completely discordant with one another, and Emboar sticks out like a sore thumb because of it.

Feraligatr, Dragonite, Starmie and Skarmory, have all gotten extremely mixed reactions from people. Even if people like the memes from Starmie, they'll always say they wished the design was something else. This is not to mention the dogshit megas that non popular mons like pyroar have gotten. Only Kalos starters have gotten universally liked designs. And thats a failure with 26 new designs added

Like what? The only semi-popular one to get a truly dogshit one is Feraligatr and gatrfags really overestimate how "popular" it is in the first place. Kalos starters were far more anticipated and they got great ones.

Tera is the best one mechanically.
I don't like Megas or Gmax because they supplant new Pokemon with temporary forms, hence why Kalos had such a small batch of them.

Do you think we are getting any focus on Hoenn legends in Mega Dimension? We know the three members of the weather trio have a rogue mega battle, and at some point you have to get Latios and Latias too, but I mean beyond that.

Sometimes it feels like they really want to spring some surprise factor that winds up backfiring. If they did 1 Johto Mega, people would expect the 3rd would get something eventually and GF would be beholden to it one way or another, making them feel trapped instead of free. PLZA was an expression of that in itself by being the revisit game to Kalos/Lumiose after PLA set in Sinnoh. So they were probably like aha we'll get two mons out of the way at the same time, what a twist! Even though it didn't give the impression they wanted to judging by their designs. I don't really like Mega Meganium myself, but I do agree it was safer. I can't say it's offensively bad, which is unfortunately the line in the sand where we're at these days to be relieved over.

If Ash was in the show that /padt/ would had a heated debate over Ash's potential new mega evolution with Ashfags being divided into Greninja fraction and Lucario fraction. Amourshipper would have flock to /padt/ to talk about Serena's potential return on HZ for Kalos promotion. Off course there are going to be Nemona fans & Sango fans arguing with them due to them shipping Ash with Nemona and Sango. If the anime introduce something similar to Z-A royal on Horizon then people would have look forward to that over solving the mystery of Rakulium. Not to mention continuation of Dark Vine crisis on Kalos where it starts to spread to Paldea and Galar forcing Ash & co to help Zygarde recover his lost power to finally get rid of them.

Pyroar got a mega because it was used as griselle's ace. Simple as that. It's probably not their first choice but after creating Griselle they realized they needed to give her an ace so why not pyroar which adds to the # of kalos megas
