Tajiri reviewed MOTHER back in 1990 in Game Freak magazine, and it's interesting to note things he points out and how Pokémon would feel like a response in some way. For example, he criticizes NPC dialogue as being interesting in typical Itoi fashion, adding a lot of flavor to the world, but unhelpful from a player standpoint and says that it needs to strike a balance. And wouldn't you know it, Pokémon has a ton of NPCs with weird dialogue that flavors the world, but it also has a lot of helpful dialogue and characters giving advice.
Both games are also decidedly modern, with MOTHER/MOTHER 2 being in a fictionalized modern America and Pokémon Red and Green being in a fictionalized modern Kanto. In that way, Pokémon feels a bit more like a Japanese MOTHER. Obviously both games have Stand By Me influence too.
