Since you seem to be ignoring the GameBoy(Advance) titles, I'd like to say this also applies to GSC (which is virtually identical to HGSS in every way that matters) and RSE. In the Kanto games I do have to be a little optimal and skip over huge parts of optional content in the midgame, as the optional content is a lot of samey trainer fights, so I will admit I have to use some intelligence to avoid those trainers. It also applies to the Gen 7 titles especially, as playing them like they're SS or BDSP is a way worse experience than playing them like Gen 1-5 by orders of magnitude more than just overeleveing a single Pokemon (if you haven't played a Gen 7 title like you do the DS games, I highly recommend it, it'll change your life compared to having the EXP Share on and taking advantage of Refresh buffs).

Even SS has raids which can be difficult, and the BDSP Battle Tower is reasonably designed. I'm shockingly excellent at XY, like incredibly good at it. Which shouldn't be, since I'm so dogshit at every other Pokemon I actually enjoy them and encounter things like challenge and fun on occasion. Something I never encounter in XY despite playing the exact same way as I always do.
