FRLG isn't an unfinished, ugly, bug-ridden mess that barely functions and half of the time doesn't even work as it's meant to like RGBY are. Even if the Sevii islands are filler content meant to add back gen 2 mons because Gen 3 was the first dexit and non-kanto evos are locked to the postgame/natdex, FRLG improve upon RGBY in every way and update the mechanics to modern (at the time) standards.
HGSS have all the QoL changes of gen 4 with tons of new content and improvements to existing content from
GSC.It even fixes the issue GSC has of most gen 2 pokemon being postgame-exclusive with the Safari Zone. It is THE definitive upgrade and, I would argue, the best set of games in the entire franchise.
