COTD returns and explicit references to past episodes and events could've all been worked into Ash's PWC arc, Goh's PM and catch quest, and Koharu and Eevee's "find your own path" storyline, as well as by making full use of the world tour/research fellowship angle of the show. Journeys really was the perfect format to tell all sorts of stories, do all kinds of things, and have so many new and familiar faces show up weekly. There was literally enough material for Journeys to be the ongoing Pokemon series for years to come.
Except it was royally botched, so badly in fact, it killed off the Ashime continuity after 25 years. As someone that still managed to find some enjoyment in the series, it drives me fucking insane how it could've been so much more and we could've gotten so much more.
