Because Pokémon. Nintendo made a concession to their biggest franchise by revenue by making Switch/S2 portable to facilitate their jump to home console hardware. That it opened up gaming for people again (like how the Game Boy releasing in '89 blew the world's mind as you could take gaming portable) is a happy co-incidence (loving the fact I get to play console games away from the telly personally). That it mirrored DPPt/BDSP taking this aspect in mind (unchosen PC becomes professor's assistant), never mind showed that 100 years prior to events, there were significant characters that were seemingly related to other named characters from the modern era but no chosen PC relation (ie no lucas ancestor NPC, if the boy was chosen, no Dawn NPC ancestor if the girl was chosen, because they got sent back and became a grandfather paradox). The english website even backs this up, introducing the characters as "the MC AND Rei OR Akari" before clarifying Akari only appears if the male MC is chose and Rei only appears if the female MC is chosen. Meaning the MC is a different person to the Hisui researchers and one striaght-up doesn't exist, becauise the genderflip don't work if they do.

There's not going to be any area outside thecity, because the whole point of it was to get a handle on creating built-up areas in 3D, not to go back and give XYgotes the missing rehash they planned then shelved to prioritise a new gen.

Switch saw a 10m increase on playerbase over all past new Gen pairs not on Game Boy (they're now outselling Gen 2 era sales marques) which similarly saw an increase of players receptive to buying mid-Gen games. USM sold 9.23m, L: A 15m. They more than got the worth of the dev cycle, given budget was likely the same as previous mid-gen games, but the retail price was $60 a piece and they earned an extra $346.2m from the extra 5.77m sales they found in between Gen 7 and Gen 8.

The way I see it, if there's anywhere you want battles to be contained, it'd be any sort of port, just to keep ships/planes from getting messed up if an attack went wild.
Gateon Port itself struck me as one of the likely places to get hit with rapid enshittification urban development, given it's where a lot of the imports from K/J/H come in.

There's going to be a definite difference in battling styles showing up, once he actually starts battling locals, rather than a kid from out of region and the benchmark rival that is Hector.
Louis, as he stands, has a questionably fair strat in Eliza and some surprising coverage in Nueve. But he's got no experience with double battles, and the first one is going to probably be where I give him a solid L.I'm going to add insult to injury and have it be against Zigzagoons.
I figured his 'mon knowledge is limited to what was readily available to him in Kalos, and what cross-region broadcasts he catches that draw his attention. He'll have some more knowledge of Galarian 'mon, for example, due to keeping up with the recurring cheating scandals their poison type gym keeps getting into.

Akari appears in the past, if you choose to play as Lucas, if you play as Dawn, Rei is the boy who helps the professor. It's to mirror DP having the unpicked PC be the professor's assistant, but adapted to the time-travel plot they'd written for L: A.

But they're improving steadily compared to where they were going into the Switch era. and that was what they were seeking to do with Dexit ultimately.

you definitely can predict what they'll do, they react entirely based on typing most of the time. like, if you lead zard on their venusaur, they'll switch to dracozolt, for example. if they don't have a typing that's good into yours, they'll try to get into a typing that's at least neutral and not weak. they're also programmed to switch if they're getting stalled a bit, i think it's around 4 or 5 turns?
