>>40058364OS was a frankenstein bc the staff didn't really know about the franchise aside from the adventure aspects of the gym quest and the "ghetto daze" (or whatever that shit is called) thing and they thought the shit was just like those shortlived fantasy anime based on LN that mocked on the JRPG genre (just like Slayers, Bakuretsu Hunters, Fortune Quest L and Thunderjet), only that aimed at slightly younger kids. It ain't SoLshit, despite of Shudo bragging on his 1st entry of his blogs about how he was soooooo inspired into Sazae-San, Anpanman and Doraemon when constructing the overall world and Ash's personality (who was literally Nobita on Shudo's eyes, but more hotblooded and headstrong). It was when Pokemon became the juggernaut it was back then in the early 2000s that execs and staff realized that the main attractive point about the games wasn't about "getto da ze'ing", but about battling other people using the Game Boy Cable Link, so they started to focus more on battles. So yeah, Pokemon was (from OI to XY&Z) a battle anime, until execs started to fear that Youkai Watch would steal their portion of stakes at the children market and they turned SM into a YW ripoff gag anime, in which they also paid a backhanded homage to Classking Yamazaki (the shortlived anime that replaced Pokemon after the 1997 Porygon shock) and that Clefairy Manga (the gag elements were taken from those 2 series). Too bad YW started to fall out of grace when SM went into the last stages of planning and started to reflect in the overall reception of SM by kids and people. And considering Tomiyasu's track record (before Pokemon, he only worked on... :ahem: Moeshit, cgdct and some adaptations from Level 5 franchises), the final result was predictable at some point.
tl;dr OS hadn't a defined genre, but was more like a fantasy anime considering the time it was released, and SM turned out to be the way it was because of reactionary decisions and its chief director being a faggot.
