I've gained a slight amount of appreciation for Hop and Leon. Opal, Piers and the DLC characters are still good, but that's about it. So much of the """characters""" are tell and don't show, it struck me how much you're told things like they like so and so or whatever and it's basically just trivia on their card. They're almost as literal who as the gen 6 gym literal whos, there is fuckall story for them to participate in. It really struck me, for example, how they shoved in that Nessa loves fishing in one of her dialogues and that's it. That's apparently what the game is focused on.
Probably the biggest offender is Marnie. She's cute and has good music, and apparently that's enough for legions of waifufags to like swsh. This point of the game is supposed to be the big reveal of her background, and then I realised that before meeting her at Spikemuth you only battle her ONCE. That's enough content to be a rival, apparently. She barely has any interaction with Team Tell before this, and you only run into her three times, and all of them are very brief. I'm not gonna stop you from jorking it whoever you want, lord knows I've spilled seed to Nessa, but they're basically all cardboard cutouts despite supposedly being a selling point of the game.
