Ash battling Gary in MPM would be pointless since there's no stakes or actual rivalry, Gary ackowledged Ash as the better Pokemon battler when Gary gave up on professional battling after.
On the other hand, Ash potentially battling Ritchie/Alain/Tobias/Paul, hell even Giselle or AJ if you want Kantooooo - all of those people actually want to dethrone Ash in perspective with them being active league challengers.
