This ending sounds good. Reminds me of the old episodes when stakes were relatively low: just a boy and his friend(s) exploring the world and enjoying one another's company. From the beginning, Ash had this idea of becoming a "Pokemon Master," but as he travels across the land, it becomes clear that this idea is simply a childlike dream with no real meaning. He's a kid. He has plenty of time to fuck around and learn what he truly wants to be. I think MPM has captured that pretty well.
I think it's better if Ash doesn't end up with any of the girls from the series. Ash has a one track mind, and that track certainly does not include dating and marriage. Maybe as he grows older, he'll find someone. But unless they show that character progression, it would be too abrupt. Sure, it would make lots of people happy (including myself, honestly), but romance is not the point of the series.
If Misty's line
>>53463138 is real, I think it's actually a very fitting end to her character. She always pretended that she was smarter and more capable than the often immature and foolish Ash, but in reality, she was basically the same. Emotional, impulsive, abrasive, etc. The main difference between the two is Ash actually went for his dream while Misty probably would have stayed fishing in that lake until she gave up and returned home. She followed Ash for so long because she thought he could help her find her way as he found his own. She always saw a little bit of herself in Ash, and as Ash grew up, so did she. She drew comfort from being around Ash. When they split at the end of Johto, she gets scared. If she's not with Ash, then will she ever be able to reach her goals? In that episode, Misty realizes that Ash will keep working for his dream without her, so she can work for hers without him. After travelling with Ash again, after he's spent so long without her, she sees that Ash is OK. And if the boy who fried her bike and almost killed his Pikachu turned out OK, she will too.
