Compare the way Ash tried to do this in OS, AG and DP to the way he does it so effortlessly in MPM. Yeah, he's doing what he's done before, but with much better and quicker results and with a lot more expierence, expertise while still having an open mind to others like Brock when they step in as opposed to thinking he knows everything.
The real issue is that they're being incredibly subtle about it and the Pokemon fandom does not understand or take subtlety very well in any part of the series. Thus, it goes over so many people's heads if it's not just spelled out, like what's happening with you right now.
