I didn't have internet for a large chunk of my teens. I found a pic stashed inside something from back then that I'd drawn with pencils. It was a topless May with huge tits and the words "seXay pr0nz" written next to it (some of you might get the reference). The shorts/shoes weren't exactly right because I had no reference other than memory but it was pretty close. I destroyed the pic though.

They could use a gift like eshop cash for promotions. Plus with all the telemetry they can sniff out major cheats. No major glitches style.

It also serves to help Gamefreak in determining weak points in their design. Like say 60% of players spent an hour and a half in the Rocket Hideout, while 40% spent four hours, then they may want to look at why those 40% were lagging behind so bad.

Not sure Nintendo would want to have such a major tent pole release at literally the end of one of their fiscal quarters cause it'd make accounting, and the subsequent quarterly shareholder meeting dicey.
