I think Serena's arc was more than just finding out what she wanted to do, she clearly became certain of the type of person she wanted to be though that's another discussion entirely.

I agree with this. I was just saying under the assumption that the writers were bringing back old companions for Koharu's sake, there were better options than Dawn.
