Gen V still mogs in terms of Gym Leader popularity. Even PokeMas' Kanto shilling only ever extends to the player characters and Lance, mind you who is more popular thanks to Johto than Kanto. So if we were just talking Gym Leaders and NOBODY ELSE it would probably be something like:
>Unova > Johto > Kanto > Paldea (carried by Iono/Larry/Grusha) > Galar > Hoenn > Sinnoh > Kalos

Kanto Gym Leaders aren't anywhere near as popular as people say they are, it's just Brock and Misty are hard carried by the anime and Erika/Sabrina are cute. If we took that into account then Pryce would also be well known for his stint as the kiddy diddler in PokeSpe. Whitney, Jasmine and Clair are very well known and Morty is very popular so 4/8 isn't bad when I had to count Paldea's current popularity as 3/8. Galar might beat Kanto or Johto, but they're starting to fall off now that SwSh isn't the hot new thing anymore

Shout outs to Alola who despite not having Gym Leaders are probably more popular than any of the characters I've talked about regardless

Those people are full of shit. The last time I did a rewatch of the full series, Ash only had 2 Johto badges before I was begging for May to show up already because the Ash-Brock-Misty dynamic had become so painfully stale. By contrast, I never grew tired of May, Dawn, Iris (it's true), Serena, Bonnie, or the Alola girls in their respective series. Misty is the only character who ever felt like they'd overstayed their welcome. Even Brock, four generations in, never reached that point for me, even when he kinda stopped doing much besides provide exposition for the TV audience during Ash's battles.

When I watched the show in Japanese I was actually surprised how similar Misty's Japanese voice is to her English voice. Or the other way around way really, like the English VA was going for a "cute high-pitched anime girl" voice that you don't hear as much in English dubs

Yeah I didn't like dropping Misty for May at first either but May eventually grew on me a bit. She's a cute dork. Misty is my favorite but it's tough for me to choose between May and Dawn at times. Never liked the other traveling companions though

May so far isn't a patch on Misty. I really don't like her personality. She seems quite...selfish and aloof. Like she's just using Ash and Brock to help her travel, she couldn't really give two hoots about them. Also doesn't seem to even be much into her own Torchic. Max is kinda annoying. As if the series wasn't already kinda childish, him being there makes it even more childish. Like the story has to babysit him and make everything even more baby-ish. I wonder if he was included as a plot device to explain the basics to the audience, because the company figured the original viewers had already left and there was a new generation of kids watching to whom this was all new, and so they needed a way to go over established basics all over again, and they could do it through Max (either things being explained to him, or him explaining a few things to others with his book facts)

Brock being back is weird. It felt like we were losing both Misty and Brock. But then the anime is like "SIKE!!!!!" and bring him back. And he's back travelling with Ash like nothing changed. Like they've totally forgotten Misty. Doesn't feel right to me, bros.
