Even if someone's chosen ship doesn't happen in canon, there are thousands upon thousands of fanworks or AU's to retreat to. Mistyfags have had over 20 years of fanfics, fanart, and competition built up. Do you think any of them are really gonna give a shit and shut down all operations just because canon "killed" the ship? No, that'd be ridiculous. Once the ship's out there, it's never going away.
