Nando losing first was a necessity because of how the writers were coming right up against the deadline to finish DP, and he was the most expendable.

I agree, though. I always liked him because of the interesting way he fit into the show by doing both battles and Contests, and his two big battles near the end of the series turned out to be pretty great.

From the Unova League Ash vs. Stephan is okay. And Ash vs. Trip would be okay if it wasn't for the fact that it's 1 vs. 1.

As for the Sinnoh league Ash vs. Nando, Ash vs. Conway, Ash vs. Paul and Ash vs. Tobias are all great in my opinion.

Overall ranking the leagues I'd say
Sinnoh > Johto > Hoenn > Kanto > Unova

Hopefully Kalos will be just as good as Sinnoh, hopefully even better.

For that matter, Johto has more nostalgia value for me, if only because of the Ash vs Gary battle. I would not agree with Ash winning his first league either, but the way he lost was simply disgusting.

I still think Nando deserved to win one battle at the very least, before battling against Ash, rather than getting out of the league right away; just a thing that bothered me just a little. That and He, whose name is forbidden.

Hoenn is personally my favorite along with Sinnoh, because aside from Morrison, the opponents he faced were an entertaining bunch. Sinnoh came up a little short on that regard because all the characters he battled besides Tobias were already known qualities. That's not saying the battles were bad, even Ash VS. Nando got redeemed by the Kricketune match as >>19040722 said, but I thought that having every opponent be an existing rival took away a bit of the surprise.

If anything good came out of the Unova League, it's that we don't have to deal with TR disrupting major battles anymore.

Sinnoh's Grand Festival was even miles better than the Unova League. Zoey vs. Nando is pretty cool.

The only battle worth watching is Ash vs. Stephan. Leavanny, Palpitoad and Krookodile are pretty awesome there.

The other battles especially Ash vs. Cameron suck ass hardcore.

Sinnoh League and Johto League are the best leagues imo, with Ash vs. Gary and Ash vs. Paul as the best battles. Ash vs. Conway (Trick Room) and Ash vs. Nando were pretty cool too.

I only watch the leagues tbh.

Fourth round Ash beats Tobias, who has Darkrai, Latios, two legendaries from X and Y and then two extremely shitty and weak under-trained Pokemon. In the final he loses to the XY girl/Rosa/Gary Oak.
