>>59039369What do you mean? It's already explained in the show: Paul idolized his older brother because he was a skilled trainer, until his brother gave up after losing badly to Brandon. That’s when Paul became disillusioned and decided his brother’s way of training must have been wrong (being loving to your pokemons aka the Ash way). So he became the opposite: acting like a hard-ass drill sergeant with a side of competitive pokemon player mindset (aka "if you're shit, gtfo of my team"). It wasn't until Ash (who is implied to be similar to Paul's brother) defeated him using the Chimchar that he had previously abandoned that Paul started to rethink his whole philosophy on battling. When he came back during Journeys, we can see he mellowed out: he's nicer to his pokemons without completely losing his edge or changing his battling style.
>What does he actually want?Previously: being the strongest, defeating Brandon to show his brother that his battling philosophy was shit all along, latter want to do the same to Ash. You know, teenage edgelord stuff.
Now: Becoming a future good gym leader, training Ash into becoming the very best
>What can make a person like this to rethink their behavior?Being defeated by a dude that is similar to his brother alongside the monkey that he previously abused and abandoned for being weak
