Mezase was way more than I expected them to do, though I'm not sure if that was because of low expectations or if it was just that good. Having 11 episodes of him just hanging out in different non-specific locales, using the different Pokemon from his adventures in typical Ash fashion and showing that he's basically become a mega-empath for Pokemon while still being his usual self was very refreshing.
However I am still a bit upset with how they handled his League stuff. I hated Ash in XY because he lost all his personality and became a fightsexual retard with a shitty one-sided romance plot, but I was willing to tolerate it since they at least seemed to finally be giving him his win. Them scrambling to throw together a frankly embarrassing Alola League where Lillie with her Powder Snow Alola Vulpix made it to top 16 is absurd. The Kukui battle is the only one in the series I think rivals the Paul match so I wasn't too upset, but the League itself just felt like a poorly thought-out consolation price.
Then Masters 8 happened and while I enjoyed the ranking episodes and the Cynthia match, the Steven and Leon fights weren't great. Dragonite was a shitty addition to his team, and the Lucario got too much back-to-back shilling. His other Pokemon (especially Dracovish) were so unexplored.
Also why are people saying Ash-Greninja got retconned when he's in the Mezase OP?
