If there was some sort of unstated goal to pander to folks who are extremely vocal about shipping on the internet, they're clearly not succeeding in MPM outside of ep 2.
I don't expect a Pokeshipping ending (and don't think it can even work with Ash/Misty in kodomo forms), but I also don't think sidestepping backlash from the segments of the fan base that prefer Serena, Dawn, etc. would be the reason for that choice.
Although I guess we could find out otherwise in some interview down the line.
