Pokemania was a big deal in the late 1990s and early 2000s, far more than any generation could even dream of. He admitted that he only discovered the broader fandom during XY (despite watching since OS), and I don't think I would be surprised with that. A lot of Amourshippers, especially the vocal ones, probably never even saw the anime before XY or maybe BW at the earliest, so it was probably a surprise to them that there were already popular girls before Serena like Misty and Dawn.
