Meaning there was never any harm in dropping it, it was never a dramatic subplot the way amour was.

Amourshipping is distinctly NOT about Ash at ALL. It's about Serena. If Ash wasn't Ash amour wouldn't change one inch.
Pokeshipping, Advanceshipping, and Pearlshipping all have a lot to do with the fact that the boy in question is ASH SPECIFICALLY.
Amourshipping isn't about the hope and interest that Ash and Serena fall in love, it's about the hope and interest that Serena's ultimate wish of being with her crush is fulfilled, the fact that it is Ash Ketchum is totally and completely irrelevant

Him and Misty traveling together would be a great finale. Ambiguous but enough to throw a major bone towards Pokeshipping.

She had a desire to be like Lorelei/Prima in Orange Islands. Why couldn't the show end with her deciding she wants to become a powerful water trainer and depart with Ash, who is a Champion and will never stop journeying?

Been doing some research on M rated shipping fanfics

Pokeshipping = Romcom fanfics that become pure romance towards the end. Timeskips, marriage, kids. More often "making love" than romantic sex. The greatest number of writers that appear to be adults

Advanceshipping = Often romance but tons and tons and tons and tons of smut. Even romance stories veer into "She breasted boobily down the stairs" tier

Pearlshipping = Lots of puppy love stories, not AS much smut as may. More comedy than before

Negaishipping = All over the place, but a typical trend of rivals-to-lovers or some such thing

Amourshipping = MANY romance stories, mostly pure romance stories from start to finish (not as much romcom as pokeshipping)
Still has some smut but the normal amount compared to May. The second highest amount of writers that appear to actually be adults

Any alola ship = Inconclusive

Just got to the point where Misty tries to tell Ash he got her pregnant while they're both non commital young adults.
The awkwardness is a stab in the heart. A lot of these fanfics are terrible but some of these people should probably find an editor and a publisher and swap some names around
