The similarly but not-quite as massive amount of long time fans will tune in, but it will not enlarge the numbers any more than the concept of pokemon ending and ash having any sort of love interest will. To most people, Serena might as well be anyone. Misty is "That girl from Pokemon" to the offlines.
Serena marrying ash would have no more cultural impact than if Lana or Duplica married Ash.
However, I still think this is a cynical way to write things, ideally the romance that the anime actually set up as a romance SPECIFICALLY should take the lead, not the one that would appeal to the largest possible sum of people
