Smash is a only a tiny fraction of the popularity of Pokemon, and Nintendo's biggest problem with them was their obsession over an older game and modding. Pokecucks always buy and move onto the next slop. The biggest problem is hacking in teams, which Nintendo/TPC themselves suck at policing properly. Also with TPC being a factor, Nintendo doesn't have as much control over Pokemon.

You’re right about pokemon’s problems but you might be overthinking the reason. game freak is just lazy and stupid. They lucked their way into triple AAA success that they never deserved. The reality is the anime, spin offs, and even the TCG have played more of a role in pokemon’s success than the stagnant and by modern standards babyish wannabe RPG’s Game Freak has shat out for nearly 30 years.
