If anything, the ashnime sends a pretty good morale that it IS possible to get good with starting out as shit. (Comoare episode 1 Ash to Kalos League Finals Ash).
In the League - there are no protagonists.
Everybody in a high power tier is just as much of a special person as much as you.
Alain also met legendaries, Paul also had the whole League ambition thing going on, Ritchie also had a Pikachu.
In a league, your "specialness" doesn't matter since your opponents are just as special in their own ways and stories.
Victory is determined by ambition.
By tactics/luck/strategies/training in advance/smart terrain usage, etc. Basically, by the strive for victory. To be the best like no one ever was but in a realistic way.
Yeah the SM and JN leagues shit all over the Gen1to6 legacies and render the morale ^^^ pointless because of how differently the philosophy of those competitions was but that doesn't matter since you already know all you need to know from the ashnime by that point.
