Ash is clearly no longer surprised by this, speaking to his experience relative to his last time with Misty and Brock

We had old cameos but they were mostly mediocre or insignificant, it would have been interesting to show us the development of these characters instead of trying to force their horrible Journey OCs, a good example of this was with Cassidy and Butch, that episode felt like the real farewell letter from the original series staff (The few that remained).

The reason for Zard not being in JN is because Ash vs Leon is meant to serve as a parallel to Ash vs Ritchie. He's on the front of the post and both anime specials lean in heavily on OS nostalgia, so Ash may use his Charizard more often.

I have a hard time imagining that Ritchie would still be a match for Ash. Ash has been through so many life-changing adventures by this point that I don't think any regular trainer like Ritchie could keep up.
The only time Ash is vulnerable is when he's building a new team, so if Ritchie challenges him in the middle of his next adventure in Paldea then maybe there'd be an interesting fight. But late-region Ash would crush him.
