For people who always lionize the OS, they clearly don't remember it all that well. Until the moment Charizard crushed his dream against Ritchie, he was a prideful, smarmy, whiny jackass who thought the world owed him something and, depending on how you count it, either got 4 or 5 of his badges practically handed to him. And even then, from there until the Johto League, most of that Ash was still there. It wasn't until he buried the hatchet with Gary that he started to chill out. But even then, as mentioned in an earlier thread, the absolute bullshit May had to put up with was unreal. Ash was such an asshole to May; both Dawn and Serena owe May a lot for teaching Ash to respect a companion who has an active collect-a-thon goal that takes his time away from gyms, because he certainly didn't act like it early on.

This I can't rationally explain like with Serena lol. They needed an excuse to depict her in light of ORAS, and thus had to make her change contest types, I guess. The fact that Drew and Harley appeared normally in their still-shot cameos was simply out of design familiarity, like how Ritchie apparently hasn't changed clothes in 8 gens; the writers clearly didn't give a shit about how their contest careers are impacted by May's change, just like how we have no indication Ritchie has done literally anything since his appearances in Chronicles.

The best thing he could have done is leave and I'm serious. Him becoming independent would save his development. The anime is even implying that with him being held back by Misty and Brock and losing to someone who IS independent like Ritchie.

Agreed, I don't mind if he didn't participated but he was a regular in older seasons, he deserved to interact with Ash for one episode at least.

I feel like Johto still has a lot of good stuff like a proper build up and end with Gary, some of the development Charizard went an all the stuff involving Johto's lore.
Also seeing returning characters from Gen 1 like Duplica or Ritchie was cool, the issue with Johto was the amount of episode it had.
