Ash wasn’t a good trainee in OG. He didn’t earn most of his badges. He couldn’t properly train Charizard which was why it didn’t listen to him. Him losing the Ritchie in a fair fight to show how he wasn’t really good would have been better than him being screwed over by Team Rocket shenanigans.

Agreed, I don't mind if he didn't participated but he was a regular in older seasons, he deserved to interact with Ash for one episode at least.

I feel like Johto still has a lot of good stuff like a proper build up and end with Gary, some of the development Charizard went an all the stuff involving Johto's lore.
Also seeing returning characters from Gen 1 like Duplica or Ritchie was cool, the issue with Johto was the amount of episode it had.

As someone who's watched it since the original hype on VCR until now, Ash did deserve this. If not for the fact he went from complete disaster (Kanto/Johto) to beating the champions.

The Ritchie league match was an embarrassment as was Meowth in Boots. He's came far.

Gary and Paul are iconic. BW was for Iris. XY rivals were for Diantha/Alain. Drew/Harley was because the lack of Hoenn representation. Ritchie was supposed to represent Kanto, like LoTrio did for Johto.

Most of Tyson's team got humiliated by Ash's. His Shiftry got one shot. His Hariyama and Donphan lost to Swellow, and Metagross lost to Pikachu. If Tyson's Metagross had swept Ash's team it'd be a different story, the issue is that he won with a Meowth dressed like a cowboy.

It's not even remotely as satisfying or thematically engaging as Harrison and Ritchie.

I know I'm responding to bait btw, I'm just posting this for bystanders.
