Grudge matches for the sake of grudge matches in leagues is a good enough reason. Morrison and Barry's stories aren't complete. Ash never beat Tyson. Ritchie was underdeveloped.

If you actually think Charizard wouldn't have casually swept through all 3 of Ritchie's Pokemon if he listened (one of them being a fucking Butterfree) you are retarded.

Butterfree only put Squirtle to sleep, and because of Kanto league rules that counts as a loss (same with switching out).

Plotwise it's mostly abysmal with horrific pacing, bullshit badges and the second worst League to date. Still, the characters played off each other well and the filler was generally speaking good, not to mention literally everything about the St. Anne episodes.

The League started poorly with Krabby evolving and winning despite never being touched since its capture, but that was OK because his opponent was an asshole and it fun seeing him get the shit kicked out of him. They sacrificed most of the second and the battles for the fake Pokémon Center Team Rocket bullshit, leaving the Kimono Girl battle being the only truly satisfying match of the entire League, if not Kanto as a whole. The less said about Ritchie the better.

So only one year and a few days are my guess. I'm thinking Ash actually passed out and fell into a coma out of anger from Charizard losing vs Ritchie and we've been watching a Dream Sequence for the past 18 years where, because he's in a coma, Ash never ages since his 10 year old mindset doesn't. This is why he loses to Darkrai in Sinnoh also.
