A character can be a dick; that's what Gary was, and that's what Trip was until he mellowed out a bit. That's perfectly fine, and it's cool if they want to go that route.

Paul was not just a dick. He was a sociopath. An unapologetic, borderline evil sociopath. He was a bastard through and through, and took his loss all in stride, with no punishment for anything he ever did.

That's the fucking problem - it wasn't character development, it was the writer not wanting his precious pet's "coolness" to be sullied by having a REALISTIC reaction to what happened, or being reprimanded. Paul is at the league, his dream in sight and within his grasp, and Ash - this kid he repeatedly put down and treated like shit while scoffing at anything he said or did - defeats him, with the VERY POKEMON he abandoned and mistreated for being "weak." Ash had come this close before, and what did he do when he lost to Ritchie? He cried.

This should have BROKEN Paul. He should have gone the way of Ghetsis and had a mental breakdown over the fact everything he lead himself to believe was a lie, that he was wrong about everything, and he was a complete ass. NONE OF THAT HAPPENED. What we got was "oh hey I lost, it's cool, I suddenly respect you for some reason. WE'RE BEST FRIENDS NOW 8D"

It was the perfect example of how terrible the writing was. But it's easier to resort to "m-muh" and insults than it is to refute points made, isn't it?

am I the only one who WASN'T bothered by Ash losing to Tobias? If anything, it shows Ash is a good trainer rather than a poor one. I mean, his Pokemon defeated two legendaries, which in the anime are treated as more or less fucking UNTOUCHABLE

The fact he got as far as he did to begin with is freaking impressive

Losing to Cameron, however, was more aggravating on account it was the exact opposite. Cameron was obviously meant to come across as an idiot savant, but it ended up looking more like the story was unjustifiably warping around him to make him win inexplicably despite his complete and utter lack of legitimate skill and knowledge

He's what everyone says about Ritchie, only more INFURIATING

If they were going to have Ash lose again, he should have lost to Vergil.

The last one especially wouldn't work with sprites, but it'd be pretty cool with 3D

His last Pokémon that wasn't weak to fire, tired or knocked out already was Charizard. Charizard sort of beat Ritchie's Charmander because it was a Fire-Type and Charizard had to prove it was a better Fire-Type, then Ritchie sent out Pikachu and Charizard took a nap and was deemed unable or unwilling to battle.
