Even worse in XY&Z because Ash was coming as an arrogant shit towards Sawyer and was getting increasingly pissed at the fact he was growing as a trainer really fast. The Ashninja set of chapters that culminated into Ash's soulcrushing loss was all Ash going blood knight wanting more power (his mock battle vs Diantha is a proof. Ash never ordered his pokemon to overkill his opponent when they were down. If not for Ash losing the synchrony, he would have done something unforgivable), then getting pissed at Sawyer defeating him to the point his battle against Wulfric was all about Ash triyng to outshine Sawyer, forgetting the most important shit. It was all a matter of pride and Ash was rightfully humilliated and humbled back due to that.
Looking back, i think the last Ash vs Sawyer battle at the league, narratively wise, was kinda underwhelming. It would be better if it started with Sawyer looking down on Ash, Ash getting pissed af again forgetting everything he had to go through and Sawyer giving him a piece of his mind reminding who was the Ash he wanted to surpass, basically saying he lost all the respect he had for him and he's having the most laughable battle ever. Blame the rush staff was into due to SM games being underway.
Although those set of chapters brought Ash's worst flaws from OS back, he rightfully suffered the consequences of his increasing arrogance, powerlust and impatience.
