XY Ash was dense but had some sense, especially regarding people's feelings. Serena would obviously not have to fear being mocked for confessing, just embarrassed.
OS Ash was impatient, childish and insensitive and he obviously didn't care for girly things to the point he insulted girls just for enjoying perfume. Misty would probably worry Ash would laugh and wonder if she honestly believed he would ever love her. Obviously he wouldn't do that, a nervous rejection would be more likely, he wasn't TOO much of a dick, but the possibility would make it harder on the poor girl.
