Keep in mind that the purpose of the ashnime is to sell merchanduse worldwide, not to teach kids about Japanese names (especially when a lot of them are nonsense fantasy world words)

Ash in XY is in general more laid back in the English dub so it makes sense that the cross torture is more relaxed than in the JP version.
That SM episode was offensive and deserved to be bamned, as well as the James-boobs episode and the gun episode.
Pokemon Heroes was edited because. Um. Well I guess Miramax didn't want kids to be overwhelmed by all that kythology stuff to avoid accusations of sect indoctrination (consider the Porygon controversy at the time).
It all comes together.
