It’s the culture, love comes secondary to social merit. You love in high school, when you get older you work and breed. there is no such concept art. shudo had an idea for a deep sea legendary pokemon, gamefreak polished off a beta design they'd been working on and said here use this. shudo himself did not design lugia, he just submitted a design order

People get upset over Lugia because Shudo created Lugia to fill a specific role and then Gamefreak kind of co-opted it for their own needs ignoring what he had planned. This extends past gender too. Lugia in the games is really nothing like what Shudo envisioned for it. It has no ties to the legendary birds in the main canon, it isn't a water type, and its connection to the ocean and nature is pretty downplayed. It's just hiding because it is too powerful it doesn't really have any actual mastery over the ocean or nature. Gamefreak had a different vision and used different inspiration. Where people are wrong is that Lugia being co-opted did not lead Shudo down a path of drugs and booze. He was already like that before the Lugia shit. Shudo was a dude with a lot of problems and I think Lugia was just an excuse for him to continue down that path rather than an actual cause for his problems. That's typical of alcoholics. They'll use something and make it a bit more of an issue as it is to justify their choices. Shudo would have done all of that even if Gamefreak had respected his every wish while finding a different reason to justify it.

Ho-oh's based off the Fenghaung which was associated with the Empress in Japanese culture as well as images of Dragons and Fenghaung used to symbolise the marriage of a man and woman. I can see why they made Lugia male, due to Ho-Oh but honestly, Shudo went off and did his own thing, Sugi had to fix and pokémonify it and the suits decided not to use his OC self-insert character and changed the gender, leading to him having a mental breakdown, due to his overlord making his self-insert a man, like nature had turned his girly head into a man's body.

Typhlosion-
shouldn't have to explain this one to anyone who has been viewing the catalogue for the past few days, but autism surrounding this on the board exploded after that one anon made a thread about how its fanbase was insufferable. This resulted in even more complaining from Typhlosion fans about Charizard, smogon, game freak, Johto, legends discussions, and really anyone who doesn't have Typhlosion as their favorite fire starter. And of course, it has its share of pokephiles, though they seem more ironic than the other 3 at this point.
