Giselle appeared in May, '97. Since then, they have rarely showed Ash to be seriously interested in girls with Latias as Bianca being the only serious example since Shudo left. You can spin it how you want, but when he's spent more time as an oblivious kid than as a shonen protag (like Shudo thought he was writing - that's why 10YO's are of legal age in his fanfics), you tend to call it as you see it.

AG was them figuring that the original set of babies aren't even watching anymore
DP was an attempt to grow up with the babies
BW was once again the show deciding that it is for babies
XY was them realizing babies love Naruto
SM figured this show should also look like its for babies
JN figured the show should have the characters sound like babies
MPM was them trying to appeal to people who last watched it when they were babies

That was Takeshi Shudo's non-canon novelization of the first season. It's full of the sort of weird shit that happens when a story that's normally told by a team has one guy get full creative power to do whatever he wants, with nobody telling him whether any of it's good or not. (and Takeshi Shudo had a terrible habit of going off on philosophical tangents when he wasn't kept on a leash)

So Tomiyasu just sweeps it under the rug, especially since he's probably mandated by Masuda sama to keep the Ash shipping stuff vague and non conclusive

Had never thought of it that way. There were other things in between (the bit where Tracy points out that Ash/Misty have the same dynamic as the Nidoran trainers, for example), but but the Danny and Rudy eps stand out because it was Ash expressing jealousy, and his relationship with Misty was at the heart of the conflict in both episodes. And then of course the movie, where Shudo unwittingly wrote the peak of Pokeshipping and Misty evil eye scenes.

I'm still skeptical, but am now more open to the possibility that it's addressed in the finale somehow.

Shudo is strange, he was the only person on the wrriting staff that didn't see Misty rescuing Ash in 2000 as emotionally resonant, and was supposedly not big on them being a ship, but he is also the person that wrote the earliest possible instance of pokeshipping (The old rando in his book saying Ash and Misty are the perfect wedded couple)

Entei is the last Takeshi Shudo entry, fitting it's the best OS Movie. Him leaving, and TPCi purging the original English VAs from the International dubs, worst decisions Pokemon has ever made as a company to date.

The writing never was as good again as when Shudo had the reigns, the dub goes like a rollercoaster once TPCi takes over from 4Kids but bottoms out and is at its worst ever with the Movies from XY-I Choose You whereas Anime from XY to JN now, respectively. Everything else ranges from bad to mediocre/only okay, the best of the modern dub was late DP (except Brock) and early BW all around in Anime + Movies but still never hit the highs of ironically 4Kids ever.

The best Movie otherwise in all languages besides Lucario, is definitely Entei: Shudo's final entry is Entei, the original English dub 4Kids cast's in Lucario, fittingly in both cases and ironic the best works of both.

4Ever, Jirachi, and Lucario are the only post-Shudo Movies that capture some of his brilliance, but in Japanese,

The dub overseas died a painful, slow death gradually when TPCi took over, whereas the Anime + Movies lost their character when Shudo departed in Japanese over time.

Shudo may have been a bit dark/moody but he had a depth to most of his work and it wasn't replicated after he departed.
