They bollocked Shudo (who blamed his animators) for allowing fish to be shown that weren't pokémon to be shown and as I said by the time Gen 3 rolled around, Masuda re-framed it, not because of the anime, but because of the shitshow development Gen 2 had been, trying initially to be a whistle-stop tour round Japan. Far easier to take a real world location, pokémonify it and extrapolate from there, than try and juggle the real and fictional world aspects any further. They don't care about the anime, beyond being a tool to market their games and the toy lines based off it, that's why they told the anime to get fucked when they begged for a mega greninja, gave them an arsepull, added it tot he games after its spotlinght and deleted it the very next time it appeared in a game, them seemingly made a mega for it the instant the anime kills the Red rip-off who stayed 20-ish years past his welcome.
But do try and tell me why being a povvo means the anime's worth a fuck in the series again.
