I had this dream. I did not know I was dreaming until several minutes after I woke up.

I dreamt that I was reading a magazine, that had a chart listing new abilities, including one signature ability - Cute Heart.
Cute Heart morphs into one of three abilities at the end of every turn, but are all counted as the original ability (if Gastro Acid, Role Play, Trace, etc. are used)
Ability one: Reduces the base power of Fire moves by 50%
Ability two: Reduces the base power of Water moves by 50%
Ability three: Reduces the base power of Grass moves by 50%
Note this obviously means defensively. So effectively halving the damage taken from all three starter types.

As you may have guessed, this is the signature ability of Sylveon - The Dragon of Spring. That's right, Sylveon evolves based on the season, and is Dragon-typed. That, or its still normal with a resistance-boosting ability, though I think I recall it saying its a Dragon. I know not what trigger activates the precise evolution. Glaceon and Leafeon may or may not be retconned to Winter and Summer evos. If this is the case, no hint as for the autumn evolution, if any.
I also do not remember the rest of the new abilities. However, there were something like 8-12 new ones, at least. They are not exclusive to Gen VI mons, but I have no clue as to who gets a new ability.

Sylviidae are a type of bird, Sylvia are warblers with some species having blueish and pinkish plumage.

Sylphs are fairies associated with the wind in particular. They are said to have airy, almost see-through wings. They ride the wind as their means of flight, are female, and are transparent. Similar to how Sylveon is very light coloured with glassy eyes and looks very feminine. "Sylphs befriend and protect other flying creatures, such as birds, moths and butterflies" the bows Sylveon has certainly do look like butterflies, one of the arguments for Bug type.

"May also drift along on draughts or puffs of wind." Considering that Sylveon is the lightest Eeveelution, it is certainly plausible that it does not use wings to fly, instead using the wind to float along. It helps that the ribbons make it resemble a kite, which also uses the wind as a means of flying through the air. In all the media so far (Pikachu short and 3D trailers) it is shown to have very floaty ribbons.

Other language names also reference fairies, who are mythological creatures long associated with wings and flight. Feelinara could have a dual meaning of the German word Fee (Fairy) and English word Feelings, as a reference to the new method of evolution mentioned.

The reason they would hide the type, is simply because they can. It's not immediately obvious, hence the debates. But when it is revealed it will be the first non-legendary and widely accessible pure Flying type, which makes it special.

I personally think it will be very associated with the wind, possibly the Pokédex showing that it can control and summon wind at its will to allow itself to fly and attack. It'll learn Whirlwind, Gust and Hurricane (as well as any potential new wind-based moves) but won't have such moves like Wing Attack or Brave Bird.

If they labelled a flying type pokemon "Birdeon" or "flyeon" or "whateveryouwantbutithavetoflyeon" there were no mystery about this new eevee type, so no hype and no interest.
Ergo your argument is inconsistent and doesn't demostrate a relation between Sylveon and bug or/poison type.

With "Silva" meaning forest, foliage and all sorts of things, why does that equal Bug? Wouldn't it more likely be associate with Grass? Yeah, Leafeon exists, but that's not the point here. The point is that Silva doesn't immediately make you point to the Bug type. Even less so with Poison.

If you argue that Bug types live in the forest...so do a load of other type of Pokémon. Like Normal, for instance.

Yeah, they could be doing this on purpose to get the debate going about Sylveon's type, but that argument can be used for literally every type theory out there.

So I had this idea that Sylveon might be based on a Poison Ivy, so I was looked up Poison Ivies on wikipedia, and to my surprise, there is a specie of Poison Ivy called Oxicodendron Sylvestre or Rhus Sylvestris. It grows in China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. So it's not only a local Japanese poison ivy, it also has Sylve in it's name. Thoughts?

Sylveon might be based on a Poison Ivy. There is a specie of Poison Ivy called Oxicodendron Sylvestre or Rhus Sylvestris. It grows in China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. So it's not only a local Japanese poison ivy, it also has Sylve in it's name. Thoughts?

- This could explain why it has fangs in the picture of its release showing it with all the other eeveelutions.

- Also gives a very good reason on what would cause it's evolution.

To be honest, looking just at name won't work and yes it's autistic to say but as most have pointed out, eeveelution's types are blatantly obvious from appearance and name. Sylveon isn't like this except for possibly normal, so new type seems to make sense.
