In a hypothetical situation, imagine that Masuda announced in 2008 that 'We have considered the possibility of adding a new type in the future'.
Pretend this is true, just for a moment.
Now look at all the evidence for Sylveon's 'Fairy type' given in this thread.
It would be irrefutable, obvious even that Sylveon is a new type and likely to be some kind of 'fairy type'. Very few people would believe otherwise.
Now get back to reality.
The only thing that is disproving this theory, is the idea that 'GameFreak would never do this!'.
But why not? Who are we to say what GameFreak would and wouldn't do? We've had 10 years as you say of no new types, yet if you look at the far-reaching future of Pokemon, it is almost a certaintly to happen at somepoint.
Therefore, any new type would need to fit into the existing Pokemon world (Read interviews with GameFreak, they are always very particular about making new things fit into the existing Pokemon world). Fairy type makes perfect sense
