Creatures and Nintendo are just as much part of it as GF is. GF can't just say "no thanks" since Nintendo needs games and Creatures needs toys and cards for each quarter. It puts them in a weird place where they set the stage with the mainline titles, but are ultimately not responsible for the greater franchise's presence. With how much Nintendo staff have moved in over the years, that's only gotten more lopsided.
Interviews and public statements are always going to be loaded with corporate pleasantries. It's important to remember that, ultimately, Nintendo has the keys to the whole operation with sole publishing rights. They both benefit from the arrangement, but GF is effectively trapped in said arrangement.
