>jerk rivalRival that is intentionally snobby or mean to the MC, not a villain but not a guy that reassures your progress or gives out tons of freebies (ex, Blue, Silver, Hugh, Gladion, probably Bede)
>regular rivalCharacter who wishes to be strong and wants to compete with you but isn't overly mean or nice to you. They may make a comment in jest but it isn't meant to be snobbish or mean. (ex, Brendan/May, Wally, Barry, Cheren, possibly Marnie)
>friendly rivalCan hardly be called a "rival" at all. Overtly friendly and constantly excessively praising you or handing out freebies and healing your pokemon for free. (ex, Bianca, Shauna, Tierno, Trevor, Hau, Lillie, Trace, probably Hop)
If you'll notice, the older games trended more towards jerks or regular rivals but now there's just an endless influx of friendly rival cancer.
