Shota was never established as the main rival, Tierno and Travor appeared way before he did.

XY fans are so desperate that they has to treat a newbie trainer beaten twice by Ash as the main rival.

Not to mention that by your logic Ash's main rival on Alola would be Kiawe, not Gladion.

Silver is very good too, his character growth is genuinely interesting and the expanded story / interactions in HGSS definitely shoot him up to top two.

Top three I'd say goes to Hau, he sort of represents the pinnacle of nu-trainer archetypes. He's supportive, happy, always excited for the next path in his journey (in doing so, gets you "pumped" too) and has moments of self-doubt, but realizes what he needs to do. He's so pure and friendly, there's really no way you can hate the little guy unless you... Well... Hate him. Also his team in USUM almost fucked me up.

From here it gets a little muddy and underwhelming, but i'd say-

4) May/Brendan >I think it's funny how they're self-admitting shitty trainers in the story, but will fuck you up if you're slacking.

5) Shauna >she's cute and checks up on you more than others. I don't really have a hate boner for the XY characters like most people and this game was there for me when I was in a rough patch

6) Hugh >Having a villain-centric story relevant to the rival was fresh, and he definitely the closest we've had to a more pissy, hardass rival since the Game Boy era. Unfortunately his character arc ties up in a very weak way, somewhat disappointing.

7) Tierno + Trevor + Serena/Calem >Contrary to what many people think, I enjoyed the pseudo "you have friends adventuring with you" concept that XY tried. They're very simply characters but oddly satisfying in that way. Tierno likes to dance I respect that, and it's kind of hilarious how his team has nothing to do with it. Trevor has a good design, and I would grind Serena/Calem's team every day in post-game.

8) Gladion >Very underwhelming. I think he's a victim of too many characters in Alola.

9) Cheren/Bianca >Meh

10) Wally/Trace >Very meh

11) Barry >I honestly don't remember anything about him.

In an XY episode, when they accidentally capture Tierno's Raichu instead, it uses Thunderbolt on James and he recovers instantly and complains that Raichu's Thunderbolt is a lot weaker than Pikachu's.

Took awhile to update because personal family drama.Sunny still hanging in there,shame I lost my Kingdra and Abomasnow though
and had to go over to Cyllage City to fish up a emergency team mate so the
romhack doesn't crash because it shits itself if you run into an edited battle made to be double/triple/rotation and you don't have 2 or 3 with you.

Olympia is a single battle and so I won easily by spamming Moxie boosted
Crunch at everything and steamrolled her last Pokemon Mega Alakazam.It was
faster but Focus Miss performed as it always does.Next update might also be awhile,keep at it guys.

I've been occupied over the weekend and couldn't make updates on my revisit to XY, but it's been quite a journey. Lots of loss, but I'm still pushing through. At my lowest point both Mega Lucario and Nidoking carried me when I had nothing else.

I just finished the Team Flare and Yveltal arc, and Lucario pretty much sweeps everything at that point. There's really nothing Flare can do aside from Lysandre's Gyrados using Earthquake, or assuming your Lucario doesn't outspeed the occasional Houndoom. My run was almost perfect, but sadly I lost Crustle Herm near the end when Malamar got a boosted Superpower crit. Then shortly after I lost my Poliwrath Lily to critical hit Acrobatics from fucking Tierno of all people (how did he even get a Talonflame?)

I had some pretty sweet pickups near the end though, like a late game Sliggoo on Route 19, Zoroark in Pokemon Village, and of course Yveltal, which is fair game because there's nothing else to catch (aside from Hotel events) in Geosenge. It still feels dirty, but I'm out of flying options. Now all that's left is Wulfric and the League.

My impressions on difficulty are a bit different than others, as from this playthrough I don't exactly find the game "too easy." I play with Set mode rather than Shift, and only use experience share after replacing heavy hitters. Having your levels somewhat close can be interesting as mid-late game you run into stronger trainers, and there's so much coverage in this game, not even just from gym leaders. You think you're sweeping Clemont's gym with a ground type you caught in Glimmering Cave, but his Heliolisk ends up using Grass Knot. You really have to consider at all times whether a switch is good or not, and though variety is great, you can still end up with many redundant typings, and this further complicated things for me. I think this would be a good game for those interested level capping runs. IMO the problem is Exp Share contradicting the limited Pokemon that trainers have.

Your personal headcanons don't matter when you aren't writing fanfic. N's fights are like admin fights in other gens, or the multiple Archie and Maxie fights in the Hoenn games since they are more boss-like. You don't count Archie's fights when counting rival battles in Sapphire, so don't inflate BW's number of rival battles based on an opinion. The game puts the team logo before N, and most of the time you fight him after a bunch of grunts (again, like admins). You spend 99% of the game story trying to stop his plans just like any other team. Bianca and Cheren were the ones introduced as the official rivals in release promo. You don't get to go against what canon stablishes just because it doesn't feel "right", because then nobody would even be mentioning Tierno in this thread who is without question the worst rival in the whole franchise.
