Why not? The strategy worked out great for Tierno. It aligned a lot with Ash's traits for how he battles. It just didn't pan out in practice. He realized it and switched to his usual strategies. No harm done. He tried something out realized it wasn't for him. Heck, he even just that would "rock tomb tomb" strategy he got from his second gym match.

Right before that episode, Ash gave Serena the advice that "Nothing you do is ever pointless", and in the gym battle, he goes against it by trying to show it by implementing Tierno's strategy, before deciding that it really is pointless.
The reason I compare it to the Elesa episode is that in it Ash tries to think "strategically" and gets his shit handed to him before having a similar realization to the Korrina one, saying it's pointless. They're basically the same episode.
Also Pikachu jobs to regular Lucario, yet somehow, without any strategy, actually negative strategy, or special training beats a Mega Lucario. Yeah, I'll take SM any day.

Serena/Calem could have taken out the Flare members she distracts, and the Shauna's puzzle thing was something she mentioned once, to justify her having a device to remove a lock. A lock that existed just to give Shauna something to do.

Trevor's there for the Abomasnow shit, even if he doesn't do much. But since he and Tierno's plan was completely off-screen and already being done by the Defenders of Kalos, you could completely remove them from the climax and nothing would change.
